Working with expert groups and clinical governance committees
In areas of clinical practice where high-quality information is unavailable or limited, BNF and BNFC editorial team members work with expert advisory groups and BNF and BNFC clinical governance committees to create clinical recommendations based on the best available evidence, i.e. ‘BNF-authored’ recommendations. The rigorous content creation process followed by the editorial team is described here.
In 2024, we worked with many expert groups and the BNF and BNFC governance committees to create clinical recommendations to support health professionals working in various areas of clinical practice. This has resulted in updates to both drug monograph and treatment summary content; examples include:
- Metformin drug monograph – inclusion of dosing information for type 1 diabetes (BNF).
- Aminoglycoside drug monographs – review of dosing information for cystic fibrosis (BNFC).
- Salbutamol drug monograph – review of indication and dose sections (BNF and BNFC).
- Status epilepticus treatment summary – creation of dedicated treatment summary and update to guidance for management (BNF and BNFC).
- Lithium carbonate and lithium citrate drug monographs – review of indication and dose sections and prescribing information (BNF and BNFC).
- Lower urinary tract symptoms in men treatment summary – new treatment summary (BNF).
- Adrenaline / epinephrine drug monograph – review of dosing of auto-injector devices for acute anaphylaxis (BNFC).
- Dalteparin drug monograph – review of indication and dose section and monitoring information (BNFC).
