Clarification of side-effect information in BNF and BNFC monographs
Omissions of information on route-specific side-effects within BNF and BNFC monographs have been identified, as follows:
- Amikacin, when used by inhalation (BNF only)
- Gentamicin, when used by ear or eye (BNF and BNFC)
Since systemic absorption can follow topical and / or inhaled administration of aminoglycosides, the side-effects of systemic aminoglycosides should also be considered when amikacin is used by inhalation, and when gentamicin is used by ear or eye. Information highlighting this will be present in digital versions of relevant BNF and BNFC monographs for the November 2024 monthly update and in subsequent print editions (BNF 89 and BNFC 2025-26).
